Burnout occurs among students when they suddenly lose interest in their studies due to feeling physically and emotionally drained. They experience further emotional depletion due to study demands, distrustfulness and detachment about their work. This study investigated the relationship between the Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits and burnout, as operationalised by Maslach's three dimensions of burnout, namely exhaustion, cynicism and reduced personal efficacy. Previous Western research was replicated in order to contribute to the cross-cultural literature on burnout. The Maslach Burnout Inventory – Student Survey University Form and the NEO – Personality Inventory Revised Form S were subjected to stepwise forward regression using FFM factors and facets to predict the scores on each burnout dimension. Five hundred and seventy-seven Filipino college students (age 17 to 24) from private universities and colleges within Metro Manila participated. Results revealed that neuroticism and conscientiousness predict all three burnout constructs. However, certain facets of neuroticism and conscientiousness are more important than others. At the facet level, facets of agreeableness and openness contributed to prediction of burnout as well.

The determination of the mean normal haemoglobin concentration has re ceived more attention in America than in this country. Recently Price-Jones (1931) has compared the values in London with those found in America. He used the Haldane haemoglobinometer and his results are as accurate as is possible having regard to the method employed. In America his results were 3 percent. above those of the Haldane gas analysis apparatus (1901) by which theclinical instrument is supposed to be calibrated. Twenty comparisons were made in America and showed that the Haldane gas apparatus gave results averaging 2·6 per cent. below those of the Van Slyke apparatus. Price-Jones considers this to have no statistical significance. From the standpoint of experimental accuracy the difference is appreciable, as all methods for the measurement of oxygen combined with Hb are essentially pragmatic.

The recent upgrade of the Arecibo planetary radar system, combined with the huge increase in the near-Earth asteroid (NEA) discovery rate by large survey programs, has greatly increased our ability to observe these objects with radar. Radar provides size, shape, rotation, and trajectory information, and in most cases is the only ground-based technique that spatially resolves near-Earth objects. While the resolution of radar images (typically 7.5m) is not as high as for the very best spacecraft images, spacecraft can visit only a few such objects, and radar observations greatly increase our understanding of the diversity of near-Earth objects, at orders of magnitude lower cost. The single clearest result of these observations is the great variety of near-Earth objects, with binary systems, very fast and very slow rotations, spheres, “bifurcated” objects, and “shards”, suggesting that a similar variety of production and delivery mechanisms deliver these objects to near-Earth orbit. Spacecraft mission planning should take into account this variety, and concentrate on broad coverage of a wide range of objects.

In this paper, we report a simple method for preparing p-type ZnO thin films by thermal oxidization of Zn3N2 thin films. The Zn3N2 films were grown on fused silica substrates by using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition from a Zn(C2H5)2 and NH3 gas mixture. The Zn3N2 film with a cubic antibixbyite structure transformed to ZnO:N with a hexagonal structure as the annealing temperature reached 500 °C. When the annealing temperature reached 700 °C, a high-quality p-type ZnO film with a carrier density of 4.16 × 1017 cm−3 was obtained, for which the film showed a strong near-band-edge emission at 3.30 eV without deep-level emission, and the full width at half-maximum of the photoluminescence spectrum was 120 meV at room temperature. The origin of the ultraviolet band was the overlap of free exciton and the bound exciton. The N concentration was as high as 1021 cm−3, which could be controlled by adjusting the parameters of the annealing processes.

We evaluated selected cool-season annual and perennial legumes as potential ground covers to supply nitrogen and to increase beneficial arthropod populations in a pecan orchard. Densities of aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae), lady beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), damsel bug (Hemiptera: Nabidae), green lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), brown lacewings (Neuroptera: Hemerobiidae), hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae), spined soldier bug and other stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), and spiders (Araneida) were monitored at 7–14 day intervals during the growing season for three years. Aboveground biomass production and nitrogen content of the legumes was measured for two years. Aphids peaked during early spring each year, with the highest density usually on ‘Dixie’ crimson clover and ‘Kenland’ red clover. Density of lady beetles was positively correlated with that of aphids, but spider densities were not. Other arthropods usually were not abundant. Nitrogen in the tops of the annual legumes ranged from 20 kg/ha to 89 kg/ha when assessed after a single harvest at anthesis; for the perennial legumes it was from 108 kg/ha to 179 kg/ha following two harvests in June and September. We chose two annual legumes (‘Dixie’ crimson clover and hairy vetch) and two perennial legumes (‘Louisiana S-1’ white clover and ‘Kenland’ red clover) for further evaluation.
